To say that the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted our ways of living would be an understatement. More than a year ago since this deadly disease started spreading across the globe, over two million lives have been lost, healthcare systems were stretched to breaking points, and economies suffered massively.
In April 2020, the Philippine government—confronted with rising infections in Metro Manila and an overwhelmed hospital system—rushed to transform facilities into field hospitals to accommodate COVID patients. Prime Metro BMD Corporation (PrimeBMD), a private construction subsidiary of Prime Metroline Infrastructure Holdings and BMD Australia, accepted the task of building these facilities quickly and in accordance with the Health department’s design standards. In just 15 days, PrimeBMD retrofitted two indoor arenas and a cruise ship into instant hospitals with 530 beds for COVID patients, nurses stations’, donning and doffing stations, dining areas, and shower and toilet facilities. The project highlighted PrimeBMD’s adaptability and swiftness in mobilizing its teams in the face of a grave and urgent situation. PrimeBMD embodied the Filipino “bayanihan” spirit in working with multiple stakeholders to achieve a common goal—helping people, especially the vulnerable, during times of crisis.
PrimeBMD also converted three event centers, a medical facility, and a private golf club into Mega Swabbing Centers where returning overseas workers, residents and COVID cases underwent testing. By end of 2020, PrimeBMD had put up nine facilities, including the largest mega quarantine center in Manila with 600 patient cubicles, rooms for medical frontliners and support facilities. A team of 160 worked 24/7 to complete the facility in 40 days. PrimeBMD protected the health and safety of its frontline staff—following strict protocols at sites, testing workers for free, providing assistance programs, and holding wellness seminars.
PrimeBMD’s facilities played a crucial role in the Philippines’ response to the health crisis at a time when people felt fear and uncertainty. Recognition by the Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards is meant to honor not merely the company but every worker who toiled at these facilities, braving an unknown yet deadly pandemic in protective gear and armed with dedication and selfless service. #
