Essay:

RingCentral --- the #1 in Cloud Communications Worldwide1 --- is on its 11th year of operating as an employer in the Philippines. Started with less than a hundred employees back in 2009 and now at 2,000 strong, the company has reached a milestone this year by achieving its 1 billion (USD) revenue mark. And the growth doesn’t stop there as it recently closed strategic partnerships with top companies - Synnex, AT&T, Avaya, and Atos. The company has also recently been named as one of Forbes top 2000 companies in the world.

Accolades aside, what the company is most proud of is its winning collaborative culture. This comes from built-over-the-years engagement of employees through work challenges, developmental plans, and outside work activities.

In 2019, there were a total of 239 employee activities, from learning webinars, team building, interest group discussions, family day, sportsfest to tons of parties. And they are not just any spur of the moment events as the Employee Engagement Team has designed it with the employee in mind, no wonder the average participation rate is at 97%. This paved the way to the Manila team getting another award, named as one of Asia’s Top 100 Best Employer Brands.

In March 2020, as Manila went on community quarantine, RingCentral was one of the few companies that was able to quickly switch to a Work-From-Home (WFH) set up as part of its business continuity plan. With its homegrown cloud-based communications platform, the organization was able to sustain business and growth momentum, even launching a new product and a new partnership (Atos), in the middle of a pandemic. This also meant extending to how we do HR (Employee Success) functions.

After a few days upon declaration of Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ), the Talent Acquisition Team rolled out the “No Contact Virtual Recruitment Process”. This meant moving all recruiting steps online - from application, interviews, assessment, job offer discussion and signing, to on-boarding. Since the lockdown, the team was able to onboard 236 new hires virtually. For existing employees, engagement activities did not also stop. Now more than ever, engagement activities have helped the team cope with social isolation. Thus the launch of Fun in the Cloud project, week on week employees had the option to join several online events - from mental health talk, financial literacy seminar, yoga and dance session, local calligraphy Baybayin tutorial, urban farming, game show, to virtual parties. It wasn’t enough that all the fun only happens among employees and so RingCentral also recently held a public virtual concert under the “We Rise Together” campaign which celebrates the Filipino resiliency and strength during these trying times.

A company’s success is not only measured by its net worth, its partnerships, its culture, its people, but also by its ability to pivot through a drastic change in business landscape and working environment. On the 4th month since lockdown, RingCentral Manila Team is ending the 2nd quarter strong and will march on for the remainder of the year with high hopes. In a time of uncertainties, one thing is evident - RingCentral is not just surviving this pandemic but it is thriving, spearheading the future of doing business, leading the future of doing HR.
