Essay:

Ooredoo Myanmar operates in one of the most closely-watched emerging markets globally. It has seen massive growth in internet penetration and mobile phone usage brought on by the rapid opening up of its market after decades of isolation.
Ooredoo Myanmar is committed to creating a positive work environment within its organization, recognizing that a high-trust culture is essential for employees to take pride in what they do. In 2019, the company embarked on its ‘Winning with People’ strategy that was built around five core pillars that serve as the foundations for positive change, namely:

  • Transparent Leadership
  • Culture of Collaboration
  • Management Excellence
  • Self-Driven Learning and Development
  • High-Trust and Engaging Workplace

These core values were implemented through a number of thoroughly designed initiatives to positively impact employees’ relationship with management peers and their jobs. Some of the key activities include:
Transparent leadership: ensuring an open line of communication and lean organizational structure

  • Monthly town hall meetings, where important updates are communicated to employees, and employee achievements are celebrated.
  • Focused, department-led initiatives, including “HR Bits and Bites”, “Breakfast with the CTO” and “Coffee with the CEO” where employees are encouraged to engage, share ideas and feedback, cultivating a culture of openness.

Culture of Collaboration: recognizing and leveraging diversity and moving away from the traditional ‘silo’ mentality toward a mindset that emphasizes teamwork

  • Established a cross-departmental committee that organises interactive and team-building activities for employees, as an informal platform for improving workplace communication through an exchange of ideas and knowledge
  • Set up various work-groups that are focused on identifying strategic projects where employees from different teams can engage and work toward a common goal.
  • Facilitated knowledge sharing tea shop sessions where internal subject matter experts share their valuable knowledge with the team

Management Excellence: well-executed leadership and management to ensure a culture of accountability

  • Developed a “People Manager Index” scorecard, which acts as a guideline and measurement framework for measuring and improving the effectiveness of people management skills. This approach has led to more regular coaching and feedback sessions.
  • Provided our mid-level managers with a 5-days People Manager Program together with Dale Carnegie Training Institute to cover various aspects of leadership.

Self-Driven Learning and Development: inculcating a constant purpose and desire for growth among employees

  • Incorporating the 70:20:10 model for learning and development, which has created opportunities for employees to own their growth, from blended learning classroom trainings and micro training modules, to a digital learning hub and cross-departmental knowledge sharing seminars.
  • Competency-based mentoring programs to equip the workforce with soft skills and personal qualities necessary to navigate and succeed in today’s work environment.

High-Trust and Engaging Workplace: creating a positive work culture where people take ownership of their responsibilities

  • Using innovative, data-driven approaches to gather employee feedback and analyse employee perceptions of the workplace – for e.g. the bi-annual engagement survey, which serves an important tool to benchmark the organizational culture and identify improvement areas.

Ooredoo Myanmar continues to be recognised for its People Practices through prestigious awards such as “2017 & 2018 People’s Choice Award” and “2017 Asia’s Best Employer Brand Award” by Myanmar Employer Awards and the Employer Branding Institute of India respectively among others. Most recently, Ooredoo Myanmar became the only organisation in Myanmar to be certified by “Great Place to Work” for two consecutive years (2018-2019). Furthermore, by integrating talent management framework with business strategy, the organization has consistently seen year-on-year improvement in engagement, learning hours and retention of high potential employees. All these initiatives have reflected positively on our engagement scores and indexes.
